Lawrence trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He made his television debut in Crime Monthly but has also worked extensively on the stage in productions in Westcliffe Theatre, Upstream Theatre, Theatre Clwyd, Manchester's Royal Exchange, Crewe Theatre, Powys Theatre and Cardiff Theatre Royal.

His plays include Trafford Tanzi, Written In Sickness, Puss In Boots, The Nativity, She Stoops To Conquer, Fur Coat No Knickers, Sextet, Funny Peculiar, Bells of Hell, Little Nut, Night Must Fall, Wild Oats, Comedians, Sell Out, Love On The Dole, Spiggy Moon, Sam Pongo Theatre, Toad of Toad Hall, The Last Hangman, Plotters of Cabbage Plot Corner, Harlequinade, Hound of the Baskervilles, Babes In The Wood, Music Hall, Jack The Ripper and Marie Lloyd.

He joined Coronation Street on 11 October 1976 as a van driver and made an impression on the producers she gave his character the name of Steve Fisher. Steve was hired to manage the factory and Lawrence remained with the series until 5 December 1979. He has also worked on various co-operate films and voice overs for many books.

He played a travel agent in the Pauline Collins hit film Shirley Valentine and played a Sergeant in The Endless Game. On television he has appeared in The Bill, Juliet Bravo, Doctors Dilemna, Rocky O' Rourke, Storker, Crime Story, True Crimes, The Chief, The Endless Game, Between The Lines, Anna Lee, Degree of Error and Heartbeat. In 1993 he joined the cast of Brookside as Steve Matthews and remained with the series for 6 months. He also played Ron in the film Dear Roy, Love Gillian and more recently took to the stage at the Old Red Lion Theatre playing the lead in Routine Business.

Lawrence is married to actress Lynne Pearson and they have two children Sadie and Michael. The family live in Walton on Thames and nowadays he often works as a writer.
