Stan worked as a clerk in the Ministry of Labour after leaving school, and became a danceband pianist, first in a quartet The Melody Maniacs, and later as a solo artist.

TV credits include: The Price of Coal, Stepping Out, The Cuckoo Waltz, Crown Court, All Creatures Great and Small, Last of the Summer Wine, but of course, is most famous for playing Seth Armstrong in Emmerdale since 1977. He has also played in the films Yanks and Agatha.
