Liam first appeared in August 2006. He was introduced as Michelle's brother but overheard Adam Barlow struggling to buy fabric for the factory. Liam worked on the markets and his brother Paul was also in the rag trade. They helped Adam out and then found out that Adam was willing to sell his share in the factory. Paul backed Liam and Liam took over, now a partner with Danny Baldwin. Danny was not impressed and even less so when Liam set about flirting with Danny's ex, Frankie. Liam didn't get off on the right foot with Frankie, though, when he got the mistaken impression that Frankie was a transsexual.

After starting in the business, Liam also had flings with factory worker Joanne and flirted with Kelly as well. Liam's first proper relationship was with Leanne Battersby who had recently returned to the Street after her breakup with Danny. Leanne told everyone she was selling real estate but Liam's sister-in-law, who was making friends with Leanne, discovered that Leanne was, in fact, on the game, as an escort girl. aka a prostitute. Carla didn't spill the beans but discovered her husband Paul was availing himself of women from the same escort agency. Leanne arrived at a hotel to meet a client and discovered it was Paul. From there, it all unraveled. Carla put all the pieces together and chucked Paul out. and the truth about Leanne came out. Liam dumped Leanne straight away.

Liam also was the one that admitted to MIchelle that it was Paul that was driving the car when they were in a crash, resulting in the death of Michelle's husband, Dean. They made it look like Dean was driving since he was dead anyway but it was Paul's idea, not his, he just went along with it. Shortly after this, Paul was killed in a crash as well.

AFter Paul died, his widow, Carla, took over in the factory and there was a lot of tension between she and Liam. Neither of them liked each other very much but managed to make a working relationship. They even kissed one late night but agreed it didn't mean anything. Liam soon took up with hairdresser Maria Sutherland even though Carla decided to persue him. Maria got pregnant so Liam proposed. They went on a hiking holiday in the Lake District over New Year but Liam fell down a cliff. While he was in hospital, unconscious, Maria discovered he had been calling for Carla, fueling her jealousy and she talked Liam into pushing up the wedding date. Even so, Maria's jealousy nearly made her cancel the wedding but Liam talked her into it at the last minute. They married in a romantic ceremony in a country hotel in Feb. 2008.

A few months after the wedding, Maria's scan proved the baby had died and she had to deliver it knowing it was dead. She didn't tell Liam at first and when he found out, he confronted Maria who was afraid to tell him because she thought she'd lose him to Carla. She did. She broke up with him and he sought solace in Carla's arms for one night, which was discovered by Rosie Webster who recorded the morning after kiss on her mobile. Liam got back together with Maria and they made a new fresh start. Part of this was selling his share of the factory to Tony Gordon who had been dating Carla. Tony, however, found out about Carla and Liam's fling and eventually Carla and Liam realized they did have feelings for each other and started an affair. Tony realized what was going on and his jealousy overcame reason. He hired a friend to sort out a hit and run. At Tony's stag do, just before he was to marry Carla, Liam was killed in the street. Maria never had a chance to tell him she was pregnant again.
