Rachel worked for estate agents Marshall Loveday, who were handling the lettings of the Shore Street flats 'builders' Jim & Steve McDonald and Bill Webster were working on for the developer Slater.

Curiously she fell for Steve's 'charms', believing Steve's very one-sided view of his life - he even managed to make prison sound attractive, but ultimately, Steve only used the relationship to try and make Fiona Middleton jealous.

However, in November 1997, after Fiona's abortive wedding to Alan McKenna (and handing a large cheque over to Steve on completion of the contract), she gave him another chance, only to walk out on him again after Steve started to pester Fiona and her new son.
