'Granny' Megan Hopkins belied her title and was the scheming side
of the Hopkins family, a Welsh dragon with a bitter tongue. She
was persuaded to give up the chip shop she had run for years and
help take over the Corner Shop. She had a volitile relationship
with her English daughter-in-law Vera,
and at the end of 1974, found Gordon
Clegg's birth certificate whilst moving furniture in the shop
flat. She found out that his real mother was Betty
Turpin, and tried to use this information to blackmail Gordon
into selling the Corner Shop cheaply. Her plan backfired badly,
and Gordon threw them out.
