Karen came looking for a machinst's job at Baldwin's Casuals,
and even though having no experience, was taken on as a trainee.
She soon met up with Martin Cheveski
who was doing some repair at the factory, and they started going
out, despite objections from Karen's father, who was a police
sergeant. Martin fell deeply in love with her, and when they hit
a rocky patch, Martin bought an engagement ring thinking marriage
would solve their problems. This only scared away Karen who felt
at 16 she was too young to be tied down and she finished with
him. A heartbroken Martin returned to his father in Birmingham.
