A convicted murderer who gave a talk at Nick Tilsley's college as part of his Humanities course about the truths of life in prison. As he talked, it dawned, to Nick's horror, that he had murdered his father Brian Tilsley.

Nick persuaded his wife Leanne to write to him in jail, and after his release, Whateley came round to Leanne's, much to her terror. They reported the incident to the police (neglecting to mention the letters) and Whateley's parole was rescinded. It took a guilty Leanne and Gail Platt to force Nick to confess the whole story to the police.
