It's Hilda's birthday, but nobody remembers apart from Annie Walker, who gives her a card. Hilda gives Stan £3 to go out and buy her a present - she doesn't want anyone knowing he had forgotten her birthday.

Car salesman Mr Dixon arrives at the Rovers to take Fred for a test drive in a new Rover. A letter addressed to Eddie Yeats turns up at Mike's flat. Mike questions Hilda about it, but she feigns ignorance, saying the postman must have made a mistake. Mike then informs her that the letter was hand-delivered, not posted. He accuses her of lending her key to Eddie so that he could use the flat. Hilda admits that she did let Eddie have the key once, but doesn't know how he could have gained entrance any other time. Mike tells her to send Eddie around to the flat for a talk at 1pm sharp. Hilda rushes home to warn Eddie, who realises the letter must have come from Marion.

Ivy decides to pay a visit to Gail and Nicky, and see how they are coping while Brian is away. She mentions Wilf to Elsie, who tells Ivy to spread the word: she is not interested in Wilf Stockwell. Donald Worthington from Social Security calls on Rita and asks if she and Len would consider fostering a sixteen year old girl at short notice. Rita weighs it up for a moment and says yes. Mr Worthington then brings in Sharon Gaskell who has been waiting in the car. Sharon tells Rita about her troubled family life.

Eddie arrives at Mike's flat. Mike opens Eddie's letter in front of him - it is a thank-you note from 'Stardust Lil'. Eddie confesses that he has been using the flat to impress Marion - he has fallen for her, and doesn't know how to admit the whole thing was a sham. Eddie eventually manages to talk Mike out of involving the police, and Mike even agrees to let Eddie use the flat just one more time - as a place to tell Marion the truth.

Ivy is miffed as she hasn't heard from him. When Ivy returns later with Bert, Gail shows Bert the letter while Ivy is busy with Nicky, and says he can let Ivy read it as well if he likes. Wilf arranges to meet Elsie in the Rovers for a drink that evening.

Rita takes Sharon into the Kabin with her for the day. She meets Mavis and Emily who are a little taken aback - they were expecting Rita's foster daughter to be about six! Rita asks Sharon to make herself useful by sorting out the record racks. She does, but Mavis finds her company a little wearying.

Marion arrives at Mike's flat, and tells Eddie he seems more relaxed than last time - Eddie says there is a reason, and he will tell her later. Marion then tells Eddie she doesn't want to go out with him anymore, because she is intimidated by his posh flat and sophisticated lifestyle. Eddie laughs, and tells her the truth about his true address and humble job. Marion is a little disbelieving at this revelation, but Eddie says he will prove he is now telling the truth. He later takes her for a drink at the Rovers, and manages to convince her he is now telling the truth. Marion meets Hilda, and they all go back to No13.

Eddie is off his food and Hilda is curious to know why. At first he claims there is nothing wrong, but after Hilda tidies up his room, she tells him she wants a quiet word. She says she saw Marion's engagement ring on top of his chest of drawers. Eddie tells her he has broken the engagement to give Marion time to consider her furture, now that her ex-boyfriend is back on the scene.

Mike and Maggie are having a quiet morning reading the Sunday papers. He says he needs to pop in to the factory, and would she like to come with him and have a drink at the Rovers afterwards? Maggie agrees. When they reach the Rovers, she tells Mike she has found the perfect location for a florist's shop. She asks him for a loan of £3000 to get her business up and running. Mike turns her down, and bluntly tells her he doesn't see her as a good investment. Maggie is angry at Mike's decision and heads off, telling him she has a business appointment to go to.

Brian is putting in some extra hours at the garage when Frank Skinner arrives and says one of the jobs Brian had subbed out to him is ready. Brian agrees to pick the car up and bring it back to the garage for his customer to collect. Gail pops in to see how Brian's day is going, and tells him Ivy has offered to babysit Nicky if they'd like an evening out. While they are chatting, Brian's customer Mr McKellar arrives and collects his car. Later, Frank comes back for his payment. Brian hands over the cash, keeping his 10% commission.

Len is exasperated when Rita complains her new sink is too high. Sharon thinks it's OK, but there may be something wrong with the position of the taps. Hilda appears at their door for a sticky-beak, on the pretext of borrowing some sugar. Rita manages to get rid of her quickly, then tells Len the TV is on the wrong side of the room - could he move the aerial point and socket?

Maggie arrives home at the flat and tells Mike a friend has agreed to lend her the money. Mike wants to know if it's a male friend but Maggie won't say. She says as Mike had refused to help her, it's none of his business.

Eddie leaves the Rovers, sick of everyone asking him where Marion is. Len and Rita plan a quiet night in at their new home - until they are disturbed by the noise of Craig Whiteley's drum practice at No9.

Rita eventually convinces him the whole thing was just in Sharon's imagination. When Brian arrives home at the end of the day, Gail is relieved when he tells her he has made the situation clear to Sharon. Gail tells him he has done the right thing.

Friday (2273, Wednesday 12 January 1982)
There's a near punch-up between Len and Brian about the leaking garage roof, which still isn't mended. Sammy calls at the factory to start the handbag production up again, but gets the boot from Ivy.

When the girls arrive for work at Baldwin's Casuals, Ivy tells Vera to forget about Sammy and his handbags, and buckle down to work. Later in the day, Sammy turns up and tells the girls the denim handbags sold like hotcakes. He wants more and will pay them £100 for another lot. The girls are sorely tempted, but Ivy tells him to get out - they would lose their jobs if Baldwin found out.

Gail and Brian are surprised that Len seems to be bearing a grudge over Sharon, and Brian decides to set him straight. Meanwhile, Rita advises Len to let bygones be bygones. A grim-faced Len tells her he's not looking to make trouble. When Mavis goes to lunch with Emily, Gail arrives at the Kabin for a quiet word with Rita. Rita tells her Len is just having a sulk because he misses Sharon, and will be over it soon. When Brian calls in at the yard however, Len tells him he won't fix his roof - now or ever, and slams the door in Brian's face. Brian angrily retorts that two can play at that game.

Phyllis brings Chalkie some beef tea, and says she'll make him well again - even if it kills him! Chalkie says he believes her! When she returns later with some chopped onions for his dinner, Chalkie tries without success to get Eddie and Marion to lock her out.

When Emily reminds the girls at Baldwin's Casuals that it's payday, all they can think about is the extra money they could be getting from Sammy. Later in the day Sammy returns and ups his offer to £150, but quickly leaves when Emily and Ivy appear.

Gail tries to persuade Brian to let the matter with Len drop, but he feels he's being blamed for something that isn't his fault. Later, when Brian disappears from the garage, Gail rings Rita, who offers to go round to the yard in case Brian has turned up there looking for Len. Gail decides to meet her there. Rita finds Brian waiting at the yard, and tells him she's sure Len will see sense soon. When Len appears, Brian presents him with an £80 bill for repairs to his van. Len screws the bill up, and Rita and Gail narrowly prevent the confrontation from ending in a punch-up.

When the girls at Baldwin's knock off for the day, Elsie, Vera and Ida decide they will accept Sammy's offer, regardless of the consequences.
