In May 1999 he investigated Greg Kelly's blackmail plot of Mike Baldwin.

All these cases must have been noticed by his superiors for when he returned in March 2000 to investigate the murder of Tony Horrocks after a body was found on the Victoria Street building site, he had been promoted to Detective Inspector. In Septmeber 2000 he investigated the death of Jez Quigley
