Judy Mallett's mother was always in perpetual debt - and is always looking for a man with a wad in his back pocket. She worked as a cleaner, both at The Rovers, Sunliners Travel and Alec Gilroy's flat.

She lived in Gable Street (the Gasworks end !) with her dog, Scamper, but not, it appears, Mr Smedley. Joyce's weakness was her Turnbull's Catalogue - from which she would order anything and everything, even if she didn't need it, and definitely couldn't afford it.

She turned to lottery scratchcrads as a way of relieving her debt problems - but, of course this only made things worse.

Things came to a head in December 1996, when she turned up on Gary and Judy's doorstep complaining of sexual harrasment by her landlord, Bernard. It transpired that she actually owed him £450 - three months back rent. But worse was to follow. Joyce had been stealing from both The Rovers and Sunliners tills, and Alec caught her. He declined to take the matter to the police, but she lost her job. Fortunately, Gary and Judy paid her rent - much to her annoyance. She deeply loved Judy but resented her help.

In February 1997, whilst out walking Scamper, he slipped his lead and ran across Ashdale Road. Joyce gave chase, and ran straight into the path of Tony Horrocks' new car. Scamper escaped, but she was killed.
