Criminals

1960s - 70s

Joe Donelli
Fact: The first main wrongdoer on Coronation Street shoved fellow GI Steve Tanner down a flight of stairs on 28 September 1968, killing him in the process. Joe later shot himself dead inside No5 Coronation Street.

Frank Riley
Fact: Frank Riley was an escaped prisoner who broke into the Barlow's maisonnette in 1968 and held Valerie Barlow hostage while Ken was out with a school theatre group. She was afraid that he would rape her but was able to signal neighbour Ena Sharples by banging on the pipe. The police eventually captured Riley and Valerie was unharmed though shaken.

Roy Johnson
Fact: Roy had been beating wife Lynn for some time. He killed his wife by battering her to death on 29 January 1975. Her body was found in Len Fairclough's kitchen. Roy confessed to the murder later on.

Gunman
Fact: There were actually two gun-wielding robbers at the infamous Baldwin wage-snatch of 11 January 1978, but one of them, apparently called 'Tommo', was the one who shot Ernie Bishop dead. They haven't been heard of since.

1980s - 90s

Alan Bradley
Fact: This was the psycho who made sure Coronation Street got big ratings. Alan came to Coronation Street in 1986 to find his daughter, Jenny, who'd run away after her mother was mown down by a car. Alan started stealing some of Rita's money, and then tried to trick her into marrying him. After this, Alan turned from charming father to abusive boyfriend, and tried to kill her by smothering her with a pillow - but Martin Platt and Jenny rescued her just in time. Alan disappeared, and then tracked Rita down to Blackpool, and then the classic moment came when Alan met his end after being hit by a Blackpool tram in late 1989.
Fact: The Bradley demise pulled 26 million viewers, and was originally aired on ITV on 8 December 1989.

Gangsters
In the 80s - 90s, it happened that every one to two years, someone was murdered by local gangsters. There's a list of the victims below.
1. Brian Tilsley - died after being knifed by Darren Whitely outside a local nightclub.
2. Samir Rachid - died after being beaten up at the local canal. He was on the way to the hospital to donate a kidney to Deirdre's daughter Tracy (31/5/95)
3. Des Barnes - died after being physically attacked by local drug dealers on behalf of Jez Quigley (who had sent them to beat Tony Horrocks) whilst trying to save his stepson. (18/11/98)
4. Tony Horrocks - died after getting beaten round the head allegedly by Jez Quigley (died off screen, body found in the excavations at Victoria Street by Vinny Sorrell). (Between 4 - 6/2/99)

Jon Lindsay
Fact: Seduced Deirdre Rachid, then sent her to prison by framing her for fraud. Later arrested and taken away.

Steve McDonald
Fact: Steve has been in trouble with the law on several occaisions. The first time was after he was caught selling stolen car radios. He later got involved with Malcom Fox, receiving stolen alcohol. He was arrested and spent time in prison for it. Later capers included break and entry of a factory with Joe Carter though he was not caught for this. He also borrowed money from criminal Jez Quigley and was badly beaten by Quigley's thugs as a result of not paying it back on time.

Don Brennan
Fact: Don always felt hard done by by Mike Baldwin. He lost money gambling to him and later was shafted by being tricked into buying the garage for much more than it was worth. Don lost everything including his girlfriend Josie Clark and blamed Don. He kidnapped Alma Baldwin and drove into the canal with her but they both survived. Don later developed cancer in prison, escaped from hospital, held Mike hostage and beat him up. He then stole Alma's car and drove himself into the wall of the viaduct at high speed, dying in the ensuing explosion in 1997.

Anne Malone
Fact: Always a dominating woman, she ran circles around first Andy McDonald and then Curly Watts whom she secretly fancied. He rejected her and she framed him so that it looked like he was sabotaging Bettabuys. After Curly went on the run from the law, also planning to search for ex wife Raquel, Anne got locked in the store freezer and died.

2000s

Jez Quigley
Fact: Jez was Tony Horrocks's murderer. Steve McDonald testified against him in the Horrocks murder trial - but he only ended up as Jez's next target. Ironically, Jez died in hospital after being attacked by Jim, Steve's father.

Jim McDonald
Fact: Jim found his son battered and bruised, and sent him to hospital. In revenge on Quigley, Jim attacked him - unfortunately, Jez punctured his own spleen and lung with a busted rib in hospital on 15 September 2000, meaning Jim had killed Jez. Jim escaped from prison in 2003, and attempted to escape to Ireland - fruitlessly, however.

Richard Hillman
Fact: The baddy we all loved to hate turned up at Alma Halliwell's funeral. Richard was Alma's cousin. Richard's first main evil deed was watching Dougie Ferguson take a fall over a banister - and instead go for help, he rifled through Dougie's pockets for cash and left him to die. Then, he smashed his ex in the face with a shovel on 20 May 2002, killing her in the process. He married Gail Platt in July 2002 - and tried to make her mum, Audrey Roberts, think that she was going mad. Richard burned down her house, but didn't kill Audrey. Then, he tried to kill Emily Bishop with a crowbar - but instead, he had to kill Maxine Peacock, who walked in on the scene. Richard died after he drove his people carrier into the local canal.

Craig Harris
Fact: Before his sister, Craig was the criminal of the Nelson/Harris clan. He tampered with Martin Platt's breaks, but regretted it immediately when Martin took his girlfriend, Katy Harris (Craig's sister) for a drive just before Christmas on 2003. The car spiralled out of control, and smashed into a brick wall. Martin was pulled from the car to safety just before the vehicle exploded.

Maya Sharma
Fact: Arrived as a solicitor, a lawyer. Maya was so bad in her time on the Street that she almost made Richard seem OK compared to her. First, she killed Monica, Kirk's dog - then, she took Dev Alahan for a 90mph joyride, married six illegal immigrants under Sunita Parekh's name, and when all that didn't work, she burnt down all of Dev's shops. Maya apparently died after a lorry crashed into the back of her car during the flaming finale of the Corner Shop.

Katy Harris
Fact: Katy was a sort of vulnerable person, until she confronted her father at the garage he worked in. Katy smashed him over the head with a wrench, killing him in the process on 4 March 2005. Katy died after taking too much sugary food (remember: Katy was diabetic).
